Brighton Bi-fest

We’re greedy and promiscuous, or just pretending because it’s fashionable. We spread STDs. We are the subject of countless myths and half-truths. ‘We’ are, of course, bisexuals, the often invisible b in ‘lgbt’. There are more of us than most people realise. Mainstream media coverage of lgbt events frequently talks about ‘lesbian and gay’ groups and ignores the role bi and trans people play in the community. Gay and straight are treated as the only possible labels for anyone’s sexuality, regardless of their relationship and/or sexual histories.

Brighton is one of the better places to dispel a few of the myths. There’s an active bisexual group – Brighton Bothways – and Winter Pride week will see the second Brighton BiFest, on February 10 at the Royal Albion Hotel, 35 Old Steine from 12 midday till 1am! Entry will be £3-5 for the whole thing!

The day programme, running from 12- 7includes workshops such as ‘What is Bisexuality?’, ‘Gender and Bisexuality’ and ‘Flirting’. We’ve invited heads of local services including the police, council and primary care trusts for a session to hear what bisexuals want and learn from bisexual experience. This is your chance to have your say, on your terms. There’ll be an LGBT fair (12-3) where you’ll have the chance to meet representatives from local services for a chat, as well as a craft and social space. From 8pm, there’ll be a friendly club night with DJs and raffle, and a quiet space for those who prefer a more chilled atmosphere. BiFest is intended for all bi-friendly people: bisexuals, people who think they might be, those that don’t like labels, their friends, partners, and family. 120 people came last year, where were you?

With all this, we reckon we’ve got something for everyone. We’re also keen for anyone who wants to help out to get in touch, at the below address. Either way, check it out and find out what the fuss about bisexuality is all about.
